My friend Sharon Sikes gave me this tip years ago. She said to keep a pretty glass bowl by the machine to hold frequently used feet, thread, needles, and bobbins as you change them. The bowl shape keeps them all in place until you need them so you aren't hunting under other stuff for the items, and it is nice to use something beautiful for utilitarian purposes. She has a ruby glass bowl, and I use a little cut glass one my father-in-law gave me.
Lest you think because Sharon and I have great organization ideas we are also paragons of keeping things neat and tidy, note that before photographing, I had to clean out my little bowl and crop the picture of the mess around it. As for Sharon's bowl--I wasn't able to photograph it since we couldn't even enter her sewing room. The door was blocked by what was removed from the dining room table for Christmas.
Yes, she knows it is March.

LOL! Thanks for making me feel better! I call it 'being organized under the mess'! Works for me!
I have kept a little glass bowl by my machine for several years for just such purpose.....but I one of my Bernina feet has recently gone missing from it and I am not looking forward to replacing it. I have looked everywhere for it--turned the area upside down. Still gonna wait a while longer hoping it will turn up. But no more sewing machine feet in the little glass bowl. ;/
Oh, that was too funny! And yeah, a beautiful little glass bowl would be a perfect little catch all! Great idea!
And I'm so glad that we all have our little messes! I'm afraid at any given moment, most of us crafty folk have at least one little area that would qualify us for the hoarder's show. I'm just grateful it's not my whole house! Ha!
Well, that's a whole lot prettier than the coffee filter I've been using! Don't laugh! It's only because nothing slips off of it. No idea how it originally got there, though!
Ha! I don't feel so bad now. My Christmas and valentines things are packed away, but I don't have room next to my machine to fit a cute little bowl. I'll have to work on that. Now if the cats will leave it alone....
