dungeon laundry room

(note to relatives horrified at the condition of my laundry room and that I am showing it--this is part of a ring of quilters posting photos of our laundry rooms. You may come by and help me clean it any time!)

Living in a 100 year old house means the laundry room is in the basement that looks like a dungeon. I was hesitant showing it, but realized we are the sixth family to live in this house and the others did nothing to improve it either, so I'm not the only lazy one. The washer and dryer were placed on concrete steps decades ago to prevent damage during the occasional storm drain backup that Chicago downpours give our neighborhood.
For the first 6 years we lived here (and for two pregnancies), this was also our only shower. Every shower during the third pregnancy I gave thanks for not having to shower in a cold place with spiders.
I saw a wonderful photo of a laundry room painted Chinese red, with colorful paper lanterns. The apple green idea is great too.
I may just have to put this place in order.

I too own a hundred year old house. The first thing we did before we moved in, was move the laundry room to the main floor coatroom at the back of the house. I am glad I did! Now, neither of us have to walk down the extra steep steps to the 'dungeon' carrying a basket full of laundry. I'd have fallen for sure!

Ha ha! I'm glad your laundry looks a bit like mine - I thought I was the only one who had a laundry not fit for human eyes LOL. I still haven't dared to put up a photo :-)

My 88 year old mom has a laundry room like that and refuses to allow us to move it to the first floor! She says she has been in that house for over 40 years and the folks before her were in there for 40 years and no-one else needeed a fancy room for washing clothes. (If you say you are worried about the stairs she bites your head off!)

I looks like my grandmothers old house...as long as the stuff works who cares!! It might be a bit cold but I bet when the dryers running it gets toasty!

Thanks for sharing!

Oh the relief knowing that I'm not the only one! We haven't got steps so much as ramps and guess who slipped off one last night, spilling dirty washing everywhere!

I am glad you don't have to shower down there any more though!

Hi Lynn, thanks for stopping over at my place and leaving a comment..*VBS* I think you are very brave showing your laundry room. And altho mine is modern these days, I've had more than my share of washing in "the basement". The running up and down the steps, the hunting and destruction of spiders and their homes. Luckily I've never encountered a snake, or my laundry duties would have been over!!
The maple leaf quilts shown below are just wonderful...*VBS* I do so love scrappy quilts.
Hope your eyes are better or at least not worse, and that you got my reply to your email ok. Hugs, Finn
