princess and the pea

We have been preparing for a bridal shower Saturday for my nephew's fiance. I had a goal of knitting 7 dishcloths--6 are done and #7 is one baseball practice away from being finished.
I love how colorful they are. Together they remind me of the many layers in my favorite childhood story "the Princess and the Pea", probably not the most progressive story out there for little girls, but it had great illustrations of quilts and mattresses.

So, I have been knitting at baseball, fencing, tennis, while blinded at an eye exam, and two, count them two mamogram sessions in 5 days. The report was good, but I was knitting furiously between takes at the call back.
An odd look comes over people's faces when they ask what I am making, and I reply "dishcloth". A bit of pity that this is a waste of time. But, in the time they have been watching a practice, I have watched a practice, PLUS come out with 1/3 of a dishcloth!

Lynn I measure everything I do by baseball practices! Chapters read in a book, blocks appliqued, bindings stitched down. I get more accomplished staying there and waiting then what I would get done if I was at home!

I once crocheted during a plane ride and layovers and I was making squares for an afghan and tons of people thought I was making dishcloths!

I guess some just think for all that work a dishcloth is too "utility", but that's what all the ladies did years ago. Quilts, crochet, knitting...it was all for the "utility" of the projects and not for the "show". I bet she will love them!

ohh, I can agree with you! People see me doing something wheneverwherever I'm waiting, and their FIRST comment after I tell them what I'm doing is always, "Oh, I just don't have time for that... "

I think time doesn't just lay there, screaming "I'm 8 minutes, use me!" you just have to be ready!

I've always got a book or something in the car too, it's amazing what you can get done while waiting for a train to pass.

LOVE those colorful knitted dishcloths! I have been working on a dragonfly one from time to time but it is pretty subdued in color. I like the colorfulness of yours---so cute!

the dishcloths look lovely! I also carry a small knitting project with me, in case I get a break- or at the very least, I always have a book in my bag, waiting, just in case...

I love knitted and crocheted dishcloths! I crochet in the car making the 7 hour trips back and forth between here and the Mayo Clinic. Of course - he drives while I crochet. I use the kitchen white cord (thread) so I can bleach the heck out of them. People think I am nuts doing them, but not as nuts as when I was crocheting netting for my scratchers, which I love too! What a nice gift you've done.

I love your dishcloths...could you share the instructions with us or are they a copyrighted pattern? It's wonderful that you can be so productive during all that "down" time at practices!

My mom crocheted me a whole ton of cotton dishcloths years ago and I use them and use them and use them and they wear like iron! I love how absorbent they are and they wash like a dream. I think yours are So nice and she will use them for years and years!

I don't knit, but I have crocheted myself dishclothes before. They are SO much better than the flimsy things we buy in the store. What a lucky bride to start out with such bright colorful ones!

Knitted dishcloths are the best. There is always one at my sink, and every few years I make a bunch for small Christmas gifts. Your colors are great.

I just started knitting dishcloths last week and have made 8 already! I used the same pattern as you did by the looks of it ("grandmothers favourite"). I love them and they wash the dishes and surfaces so much better than the bought foam ones. My sister-in-law asked me what I was making (I had taken my knitting to a family dinner) and the look on her face when I said "a dischloth" was a classic LOL.

I forgot to add that Princess and the Pea was my very favourite childhood story!
