bookends

It is a bittersweet time as I enter my retirement.
My nursing career began upon graduation from Morningside college and I was able this spring to attend their Maud Adams Research Day, named in honor our our first nursing professor who has remained a voice in my head at every patient and student encounter for 45 years.
I've worked at the bedside at The University of Iowa, Rush University, and several hospices, for a nursing association, and have taught as adjunct at Oakton College for nearly 20 years and adjunct and full time at Northern Illinois University for nearly 15. I am grateful for my colleagues.
A phrase I have often used in lecture is, "Your identity as a nurse is not tied to a paycheck. You are a nurse in your family, in your community, and in the voting booth."
Now it is my time to focus on those places.

I never wore my cap in practice, but we did wear them as students. I donated mine to my high school theater's props/costume department upon graduation

  2. This is Julie, of JulieKquilts. I just wanted to say...congratulations! You have benefitted so many patients via your direct care or teaching your students. I wish you an amazing retirement...but we never really retire, you know. Nurses know too much, and are part of a special group, aren't we??? Hurrah for you!!!

  5. Retirement is not the end of anything - it only means you no longer need to worry about "time clocks" and such. Go forth and enjoy the world beyond.

  7. What a wonderful career you had, touching the lives of many thousands of patients and colleagues alike. Retirement will take some adjustment after a lifetime of medical service, but I'm sure you will enjoy the quieter pace. And no doubt you will still be catching up with your colleagues now and again, but in a more social setting. You can out that alarm clock away now!

  8. Congratulations Lynn. I look forward to seeing all of the beautiful quilts you will finish in your "free time". LOL. Every one of my friends who has retired is twice as busy as before. Some have grandchildren, some travel, and some love to read extensively. I hope you get to spend even more time with family and those you love.
